One of my favorite buildings in Bushwick, at the north corner of Hernández Park seems to be under repointing work. As I understand it, that’s a big ticket job.

I was happy to see that they had cut down their crazy weed tree growing out of the foundation. Thing was weeeeird. Had a pinched trunk.
Good for them. And it reminds me that we needed to tuck and point some stuff ohhhh, 3 years ago.

I walk past this building everyday. They seriously need to consider some of that super-shiny, anti-graffiti paint when they’re done because this place always gets tagged in a very busted way! It looks a lot better now that they got all the graffiti off of it.

That storefront used to be a candy store. A favorite stop on my way to school at P.S. 123. I wonder if the old lady still lives on the first floor? She adopted my dog after we moved.

i would offer some suggestions on gentrification of this area, but don’t want to get into more trouble, but it is a nice building. the detail around the windows is great.

that weed tree was probably a black cypress. they used to use that stuff for laly columns, those things grow anywhere and everywhere. i wonder if the stench eminating from the park reaches the residents of those apartments!

It’s strange seeing this neighborhood now as opposed to the 1960′s through the late 90′s . I’m a addict in recovery and clean for a little more than 5 yrs now .
I wonder if the new residents of the area have even a clue to all the pain , suffering and violence that plagued the neighborhood . I remember at one point in the late 1980′s the police had Troutman St closed off to traffic but the for the junkies it was ok to stroll down the street and buy your heroin , cocaine , crack , syringes etc . All of this in plain sight of the uniformed policeman on each end of the street . I think about the Park now named
‘Hernandez Park ” after Maria and I wonder if people buying up this real estate even know who she was . The sad thing is that drugs and the problems that come with them will always exist , they just move from street corners to meeting people after a cell phone # is dialed and now you have a delivery service instead of a line snaking out of a six family brick building with railroad flats .
