Bushwick Salvaging

Every time I walk by an empty lot with tons of bluestone, I make a mental note. It’s heavy stuff, and a lot of it needs to be dug out, so if I don’t have a definite project for it I’m not going to beg a ride in my friend’s truck to go harvest it. But this weekend I needed bricks, so I went around the corner with my orange bucket and fished about 50 bricks out to finish a small area for my grill. While I was deep in the ruins, I discovered some decrepit old blue hatch doors, and even though I have no idea what to do with them, I grabbed them anyhow.

I have them propped up to screen the part of the yard that’s still trash and weeds from the more finished section, but I think it looks half-ass. Any suggestions for these things?

This might be too simple… but tables for your yard?

I agree nice picnic tables would be great for these.

Where are you finding things such as these, and the bricks, etc.

Is there any risk from taking them?

Are things in an empty lot free? Can you get in trouble?

    build a drawbridge!

then of course you’d need a moat …

Open air outhouse? Pidgeon coop? Risers to make that ‘lil doggy look bigger and meaner?

They might look cool just leaning on the back fence or in the back corner once you’ve conquered the weeds and expanded your cleanup.

  6. Wickster says:

Please no more pidgeon coops in bushwick!

How about a little shed to keep gardening supplies in?

So it’s true? Jeremy found access to a vehicle to pick up things for his house. Never would we have gueseed it would be these big things.

Ditto to the table comments. Also - if you are artistically inclined or know someone who is, you might be able to spice them up and hang them on your wall, or use them as a headboard for a bed. They’re pretty cool, if you decide you don’t want them I can take one off your hands!

#4: shut up you idiot, it’s a COLLAPSED HOUSE that is currently being cleared out.

Table might be a good idea.

What are the rules governing empty lots, abandoned houses, even those that have collapsed.

Are they a free for all even though the owners cannot be found and never come around?

  10. Cindy L says:

Anyone know where some good vacant lots are. I’d like to start shopping!

  11. [...] the corner from me is a collapsed house, which a tipster told me was recently bought by a guy who is busily buying up neighbors’ air [...]
