Because of this. What’s this have to do with Bushwick? Uh…well I got all the ingredients — whole wheat flour, eggs, milk, butter (so much butter!), maple syrup, nectarines, blueberries, bananas, raspberries — through Fresh Direct, who supplies at least 4 people in this house with their weekly food crack. I still hit up the Associated on Knickerbocker for all the stuff Fresh Direct doesn’t have (or doesn’t have cheaply), like tamarind concentrate, guava paste, and well, rice in 10 pound sacks. In a pinch I can run there for chicken…but I don’t recommend it. Their produce leaves much to be desired, even for tropical stuff; in fact, I go to my corner bodega for avocadoes and plantains, which for some reason does just a few things really well…and everything else is the pits.
And now you know what a glutton I am.

I have to disagree on the Ass…ociated. Well, not completely disagree but I think they’ve really stepped it up in the last few months.
Nothing to shout from the rooftops, but if you had seen their ‘produce’ three years ago…gahh!
That being said, I still highly recommend the veggie market on Knickerbocker between Willoughby/Suydam for some serious veggie action.
Jeremy July 13th, 2007 at 12:25 pm
Yeah that’s definitely the best produce store I have seen. There’s a tropical fruit market on Broadway this side of Myrtle that has tons of stuff but it’s sort of ratty-lookin and they didn’t have quenepas. wtf?
Becky July 13th, 2007 at 12:59 pm
Yeah. Angel’s Fruit Market is the best! I get all my fruit there and it’s cheap too. You can get an organic pineapple for $2.99. The butcher and fish market on that same block are good too. I got a whole Tilapia for $3.00. (Wow, I’m a little too excited about that.)
While I agree that the Associated has improved, I still go to the C-Town on Wyckoff if I can.
Jeremy July 13th, 2007 at 1:01 pm
Last time we were in the Assoc on Knick, there was a lot of organic versions of stuff. Their meat is still terrrrrible. I’m asking for filet mignon but can we get some skirt steak over here?
Becky July 13th, 2007 at 1:22 pm
That’s why you go to the butcher that’s a block away from there! Better meat, less packaging, and you’re supporting a local, small business owner.
Matt July 13th, 2007 at 2:51 pm
Good to hear on the butcher, baker and candlestick maker….I mean fishmarket.
I’ve always wanted to hit the fish market but have been timid and wary. Even though it looks like it’s busy I could just never get myself to ‘believe’ in it. And for some reason I just always forget about that butcher shop.
Gunna have to give them a try.

Has anyone ever gone to the Fish Market on the corner of Halsey & Broadway?
Is it a real fish market, or one of those places that mostly sells fried fish with french fries.
Rachael Anne July 13th, 2007 at 6:11 pm
Ok that photo makes me hungry, and I am dying to snatch one of those bananas!
Jimmy Legs July 13th, 2007 at 7:09 pm
i’ve never been to the fish market but i walk by it all the time. appears to be the real thing, tho they do sell the fried variety as well. it smells awful though, and tho i don’t eat fish i’m pretty sure that truly fresh fish shouldn’t stink so much. but i don’t really know one way or another.

Oh My God…

Did anyone get a chance to get to the “Farmer’s Market” (aka the one tent) over at Maria Hernandez park today? They have all organic produce and its great – I got a head of red lettuce and 3 onions (with greens!) for $4. The lettuce was delicious and the onions and greens are so big they’ll last me through the whole week.

So when are we having a brunch party? I’ll bring the Bloody Marys (well, I’ll bring my husband, who makes the best one around). ;)
Wickster Girl July 15th, 2007 at 11:53 pm
Yes, I’ve been past that fish place on Halsey too. On the other corner is a pizza place, and I see some grease on the sidewalk.
Jimmy if you eat vegan, where on earth do you buy groceries from. Fresh Direct doesn’t deliver to SoBu yet, and by having a restricted diet and living where amenities are few, what’s a guy to do?
Jeremy are there 2 people live on each floor of your house? or just 3 roommates?
Brunch party? Wow are we trying to be like Park Slope already?
Jeremy July 16th, 2007 at 10:03 am
Wickster, actually there are 7 people here, but only one “roommate” (bf).
What does brunch have to do with Park Slope?
Wickster Girl July 16th, 2007 at 11:10 am
Hmmm, I a little confused. 7 people in a two family house. So one roommate and 5 kids? Or maybe the upstairs is a rental, with 5 peole upstairs. If you are on the bottom level, that’s a lot of footsteps.
It’s always interesting to see the space, and the rooms versus the number of people. These days some rooms are so small, and barely fit a twin bed, not to mention tiny closets.
One associates more affluent areas with brunch. Park Slope has lots of places serving brunch, and lots of nice gourmet stores selling things for a nice brunch at your own place.
Bushwick has chinese and pizza, dunkin doughnuts and popeyes chicken. Not exactly things on the cover of gourmet magazine for fine summer dining.
Jeremy July 16th, 2007 at 11:24 am
Rather not get into the exact configuration and habitation patterns of my house.
I still don’t see the connection between having brunch and “trying to be like Park Slope.” When I eat waffles, am I trying to be Belgian? Maybe I should put down the artisanal Valdeón and pick up an extra-crispy drumstick? Would that be “real” enough for you?

re:#13,
eh, being vegan isn’t so tough, the key food actually stocks that fake ground beef stuff, veggie burgers, tofu. plus, Lucy’s Fruit Market has decent produce and some weird stuff that happens to be vegan, like the ‘dehydrated soy chunks’, it’s better than it sounds! Lucy’s also has spice packets to make indian cuisine, which is also very helpful. i also make a lot of mexican stuff (rice & beans, tacos). the only thing i can’t seem to find around here that i really want is tahini to make hummus but i can get it in midtown when i’m at work. ooh, i should make a blog post about this!
Wickster Girl July 16th, 2007 at 4:27 pm
That’s okay Jeremy I didn’t mean to pry, but hope you see my point about how people live. For some people they are tired of living with roommates and for them moving to Bushwick, and buying their first cheap home is really something. Regardless of your living situation, home ownership is something, we should all be careful about the financial and deed arrangements especially if you aren’t married. That’s just me.
I think for some they associate finer cuisine in different neighborhoods. Kind of like people in brooklyn heights eating wine and cheese overlooking the promenade. I find myself in pizza joints and chinese places I wonder why the health dept. hasn’t closed. Just envy I guess, but hope the selection improve here.
StyBye July 16th, 2007 at 10:47 pm
as long as Jeremy has a big enough kitchen in his house to hold all his food cravings, that’s all that matters.
eating all the food in that picture, i wouldn’t have the nerve to go to beach.
maybe the reference to park slope is they are seen as doing brunch more than less gentrified neighborhoods, where they think we only drink beer on the front steps!
yasky July 25th, 2009 at 2:17 am
Did you make the waffles yourself? Dang, that thang looks good!
