I actually always dig these kind of pieces. Really puts in perspective how much that area has changed over just a handful of years…..when I first arrived you were lucky to see a single person walking around the loft section..now it is really buzzing most of the time. Add a handful of more businesses (we know about the pizza spot – although last time i peered in it looked a LONG way from being finished, and i have also heard of plans for a wine/liquor shop further down on Bogart) and it will be a really happening commercial area.
Hey Jeremy any news on the Flushing project and anything happening over in your neck of the woods? Any more clues about the spot or two you mentioned awhile back?

Yes No Maybe is crawling along but I do see work going on when I walk by and there does seem to be progress made in the yard, but the inside is always closed up, so it’s hard to say.

It’s great papers like this are doing feature articles on Bushwick. Afterall this paper I think is based in Brooklyn Heights. I wish we just one of those hip eateries in Southern Bushwick. So far it’s just Popeyes Fried Chicken and McDonalds as far as fine dining goes.

I love Popeye’s! Mary, you should do some research to see what kind of sit-down restaurants you do have. I admit I have been hesitant to eat at, say, the Mexican pizza place on my block, and it’s not because my dad would kill me if he knew I ate pizza at a Mexican place. I just glance in and see the sea of formica and plastic flowers and think — go inside or move on? — and I move on. There is an Ecuatorian place on Myrtle and…DeKalb?…that I want to try because it looks nice from the outside.

It also has a WEIRD name. And you know, there’s just too much good pizza in Bushwick made by Italians and Italian-Americans to go to a Mexican place for it. Like if I want tacos, I’ll go to that taco joint on Starr — I’m not gonna have the white-boy burrito at Life Cafe (half their menu is Mexican-inspired! blah!).

I’m sure Jimmy Legs might agree, but I wish we had such ethnic restaurants near us however good or bad they may be. However werid their name is, and even if you don’t have the nerve to eat their right away. Since we are closer to BedSty for us it’s these places that sell pizza/chicken, and anything fried. They are usually not too clean, and it looks like most might have to building violations. There is a fish market on Broadway and it smells up the entire corner, and it looks questionable inside. When I want a decent piece of chicken, yes Popeyes will do, but it’s coated and cooked in heavy duty oil so it’s not exactly healthy by any means. I can’t even get a decent salad, or piece of fruit around here. When’s someone going to buy a commercial property on broadway and open a cute little sandwich or pastry shop!

I’d quit my job if I could figure out how to start up a business on my budget. I have so many ideas but not enough knowledge on how to make it work. Gah.

There is definitely a clientele over here on dekalb who would love more options as well. If you go to NEK any night of the week the place is packed and I’m always so surprised. We could really use another place to eat. NEK is running out of room for us all.

Bushwickgirl, yes, NEK is packed to the gills all the time. It makes little sense to me. If I knew how to go about opening a business I’d definitely throw whatever cash I have toward it, it’s a no-brainer.
