The drool-inducing blog Year of the Pig went to the Ridgewood Pork Store and shared some of their experiences with us:
From the outside of the store, there is nothing to really grab your attention at first glance. It looks like a plain Queens store front, with an awning advertising it as a “European Meat Market.” A closer inspection shows store windows loaded with kitschy Pig statues, European flags (I think I can identify Romania, Ukraine, Lithuania, Poland, Czech Republic) and plastic flowers surrounding imported European foodstuffs and a selection of hanging cured and smoked sausages. That’s enough to make me curious.
The photos alone are enough to get the juices flowing, but the description of the place, and the enthusiastic owner, make me want to get up and over there ASAP. Read on…

Wow if you are a pork/meat lover this seems to be the place. I guess it’s the closest thing we have to a gourmet store in Bushwick? Unfortunately I’m near Broadway near Halsey street, and I can tell you there aren’t many places to eat healthy there. Good luck trying to find a salad. with Pizza, chinese, and what is at the local bodega the choices aren’t great.
One day a cool coffee shop with pastries will open, and that will be good.
I like Ridgewood, but the train transportation isn’t great there, but that are is so calm, and nice.

I biked by this place last night. I was smaller than I thought it was going to be, but I took a look. I was really happy to find some various pickled things from Poland. I bought a rather large jar of pickled mushrooms and some sauerkraut. I also bought some of the fresh sausages. I’m going to have to go back for some of the smoked/dried sausage some other time. It was a little overwhelming for a first visit.
If you go by there, stop around the corner at the Catania Bakery, 487 Harman St. A friend who used to live in Ridgewood clued me into it. They have an amazing array of Italian pastries, breads, cakes and bagels. When you order a cannoli, they take the shell into the back room and fill it for you fresh. Wow. It was so good. And the large ones only cost $1.75 each. I’ll be going back there soon. I had my eye on a creampuff, and a cake, and some cookies…
