Does your landlord suck? If so, I’m sure you’ve complained to whoever will listen. Why not complain to the whole world on a searchable database of crappy landlords? A friend of mine has set up DontRentFrom.com, where you can anonymously enter info about your landlord or management company where anyone can see it. Definitely useful in Bushwick, and in the rest of Brooklyn and all of New York as well. It’s a no-frills tool that hopefully, if it becomes widespread, could have some effect in the rental market. Check it out!

The bad thing about this is tenants that are awful, and write untrue things about their landlords. Would there be any defamation of character lawsuits possible if something was written against a good landlord.

Well, they could reply to the listing. Of course a tenant blacklist would be a horror of horrors for the something-for-nothing type. Hey, it’s not the terror watchlist, at least. :-D

Most Landlords that end up on blacklists are there for a reason- if there isn’t a problem, people don’t make the effort to find out how to put the landlord on the blacklist. If you are on a blacklist and think you shouldn’t be there- you are in denial. People are just trying to warn other renters.

Is there a website like that for Canadian residents? I was renting from a landlord who treated me horribly by leaving me angry and threatening letters and I always paid all my bills on time. I even have an email from her saying that I was a good tenant, and then she suddenly turned on me. (It was a barn that I was renting) and it flooded at one point and she wouldn’t replace the property that I had damaged. As well, I over paid a bill and when I asked for my money back, she got very defensive and refused to pay me back. I just want some way to get the word out there about how this person runs their business so other people don’t get treated the way I did.
